What is Ankle Arthritis?

While there are over 100 types of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis most commonly affect the ankle joint. With osteoarthritis, cartilage in your ankle joint breaks down over time due to normal “wear and tear.” However, with rheumatoid arthritis, your body’s immune system attacks its own tissues damaging the cartilage in this area.

How is Ankle Arthritis Treated?

Typically, conservative treatment will help heal an ankle fracture. However, if your injury caused a piece of your bone to break off, your doctor may recommend open reduction and internal fixation with plates and screws to fix the injury.
