What is an ACL Tear?

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is a band of tough, fibrous tissue found inside your knee joint. It runs diagonally in between your knee and helps prevent your tibia from sliding out in front of the femur. An ACL tear can occur when changing direction too quickly, stopping suddenly, slowing down while running, or landing from a jump incorrectly.

Symptoms of an ACL Tear

Pain with swelling within 24 hours of the injury
Loss of range of motion
Discomfort while walking
Some patients hear a “Popping” noise upon injury

How is an ACL Tear Treated?

To completely restore knee stability, an orthopedic surgeon will need to surgically repair the ACL through an outpatient procedure known as an ACL Reconstruction.
