What is Runner's Knee?

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), also known as runner’s knee, isn’t a specific injury. It’s a broader term describing pain around the front of your knee, or kneecap. While it’s common in runners, it can affect walkers, bikers, jumpers and anyone that continuously bends their knee during exercise. Many things can contribute to this type of pain including problems with alignment of the kneecap and overuse from extreme training.

Symptoms of Runner's Knee

Pain in front, behind, or around your kneecap
Swelling around your knee
Pain after sitting with your knee bent for long periods of time
Some people even experience popping inside the joint
Pain while walking downstairs

How is Runner's Knee Treated?

If conservative treatment like rest or injections do not reverse the issue, your surgeon may recommend surgical treatment through an outpatient procedure called Knee Arthroscopy.
